A Survey on the Laboratory Work of Health Centers in Korea

Abstract
A survey was carried out from September 1 to October 20 for a period of 50 days, toward 144 health centers among 189 health centers throughout the country.
The survey was aimed at finding out the status of health centers¢¥ laboratory work and its working availability the maintenance status of apparatus and equipments and its utilization the number of the laboratory technician license possessing rate and the kind of license and academic background of the personnel, period of their engagement whether or not the workers are regular or temporary of the health centers and dispached. And also dealed with the floor spaces occupied by laboratory in health centers.
This observation was based on 49 survey items including bacteriologic examinations, parasitic examinations, test in environmental sanitation, test for blood and biochemistry and 34 experimental apparatus and equipments for the examination of the said procedures, conducted by the Author.
The results are summerized as follows:
Bacteriologic examinations out of the total laboratory works showed comparatively lower rate, but parasitic examinations were excellent. On the contrary, environmental sanitary examination, especially, chemical test of drinking water was lowest. Among the above-mentioned laboratory works, compared with level of health centers o of county, city and district(Ku), district health centers were relatively good. followed by health centers in city, and in county, which showed comparatively much differences.
The average maintenance rate of laboratory apparatus and equipments in health centers were poor.
By the license possessing rate of laboratory workers, clinical pathology technician were occupied in large proportion, followed by the workers who do not have license, and sanitary laboratory technician were lowest. By the member, dispached technicians from the Korean Association for Parasite Eradication, the Korean National Tuberculosis Association, and others were comparatively occupied in large proportion, on the contrary, regular technicians of health centers were in small proportion.
Finally, the total floor spaces of the laboratory were not enough to experiment in all kinds of laboratory works. Moreover in six health centers, there were no any spaces for laboratory.
